The International Energy Agency (IEA) held a high-level meeting at its headquarters in Paris on February 20, calling on all parties to implement the important energy commitments made at the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in an effort to achieve global temperature control goals.
In December last year, COP28 reached the UAE Consensus on a number of issues, including the first global inventory of the Paris Agreement, mitigation, adaptation, finance, loss and damage, and a just transition. The Consensus sets global targets for 2030 to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels, triple installed renewable energy capacity, double energy efficiency and significantly reduce methane emissions.
IEA Administrator Fatih Birol noted that the UAE Consensus is of great significance to the global clean energy transition as it clarifies the way forward for the global energy sector. However, the implementation of the Consensus will require a lot of hard work and continuous analysis of the progress and means to achieve these goals. IEA is willing to work with countries to transform the vision into reality.
Bilor said that the IEA will take a number of initiatives to promote the implementation of the relevant commitments made by all parties at COP28; and to assist all parties in developing solutions to provide more funding for the clean energy transition.
